SPM Ferries sails between Fortune, Newfoundland, and Saint-Pierre, capital of the French islands of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this autumn: usually 09:00 out of Saint-Pierre and 13:00 back from Fortune, 1 h 30 each way. The 2026 calendar is published to 30 December, plus a sailing on 4 January 2027. Fares are in euros: €45 one way for an adult.

Do you need a passport to reach France from Newfoundland? For many Canadians, no — but it is easier with one. SPM Ferries, run by the territorial government of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, accepts a valid Canadian driver's licence or provincial photo ID card for entry, provided you travel directly from Canada and stay no more than 90 days. Going back into Canada at Fortune is stricter: without a passport, a Canadian citizen needs that photo ID plus a birth certificate.
The crossing itself is short. The operator's two identical ships, Nordet and Suroît, each take 188 passengers and 18 cars, cruise at 20.5 knots, and cover the run from Fortune in 1 h 30. This autumn they sail on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, generally leaving Saint-Pierre at 09:00 and Fortune at 13:00, so the boat spends a few hours in Newfoundland before heading back.
Day trips from Fortune therefore do not work on a normal sailing day — you arrive in the afternoon, and the next boat back to Fortune leaves two or three days later. Plan on at least two nights in Saint-Pierre, or more over a weekend.
Every price is in euros, set by the territorial government of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon; SPM Ferries publishes no Canadian-dollar equivalent. Passenger tickets can be bought online. A vehicle is a separate ticket: it cannot yet be booked on the website, so you contact a ticket office by phone or email and they send a payment link. The driver and each passenger still need their own passenger ticket.
The vehicle table also lists a flat €7 handling charge for loading or unloading a vehicle up to 3,500 kg; ask the ticket office whether it applies to your booking.

Fortune is a small Newfoundland port facing the French islands; Saint-Pierre is the main town of the archipelago, where the ship docks. SPM Ferries also links Saint-Pierre with Miquelon and with Langlade, but those are domestic French routes and not covered here.
For the other ways onto and off the island of Newfoundland, see the Port aux Basques ferry from North Sydney in Nova Scotia, or the provincial run across Bonavista Bay on the St. Brendan's ferry.
Start at the SPM Ferries ticket office at 8 Bayview Street, which opens pre-boarding 1 h 30 before departure to check tickets, ID and, where needed, visas. Drivers then get a pass that lets them line up at the boarding gate by wharves 5 and 6 on the waterfront; without it, staff on the wharf send you back to the office.
Coming back the other way, Fortune is where you re-enter Canada. CBSA officers clear foot passengers at the ship and inspect vehicles, which must be free of soil and plant matter.
The terminal and ticket office are on the Quai de la Douane in Saint-Pierre town. Here too, pre-boarding begins 1 h 30 before sailing; French border police check everyone on the way out, and vehicles leave the ship first on arrival before passport and customs checks.
A valid Canadian driver's licence or government photo ID card lets you stay in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon up to 90 days in any 180 if you travel directly from Canada. Every child needs their own ID.
Canadian citizens need government photo ID and a birth certificate proving citizenship to re-enter at Fortune.
Visa-exempt foreign nationals arriving in Canada by sea from Saint-Pierre need an eTA (CAD $7). French residents of the islands and US citizens and permanent residents are exempt.
Your vehicle must be insured to drive in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Otherwise customs sell border cover on arrival: €175 for 1–30 days, or €430 up to 90 days, under 3.5 t.
Each pet needs its own one-way ticket and a cage; you collect it after the border checks.
Every sailing in the calendar is subject to weather. The operator asks travellers to check the online timetable for changes.
Since August 2021 the ships have carried passengers' cars as well as people, which changes the paperwork. Leaving Saint-Pierre, SPM Ferries' staff look over each vehicle because Canada Border Services Agency officers in Fortune can refuse one with soil or vegetation on it, or order it cleaned at the owner's cost. Arriving in Saint-Pierre, the car needs insurance valid on French territory.
On 5 June 2026 Canada added a requirement that applies only on this crossing: visa-exempt foreign nationals entering by vessel from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon now need an electronic travel authorization, at $7 Canadian, unless they fall into one of the exempt groups.
Usually 13:00 local time. Exceptions: 14:00 on Thursday 29 October and 19:00 on 25 November and 9 December 2026.
1 hour 30 minutes, according to SPM Ferries' 2026 calendar.
